Technologies that will create the future – HORIBA, Ltd.
HORIBA and the Future of Life
Driving innovation in three fields that are absolutely essential for creating a prosperous future society: “Energy & Environment, “Bio & Healthcare”, and “Materials & Semiconductor.” With our revolutionary “Measurement and Analysis” technology and solutions, HORIBA contributes to future technological innovation in these three fields. Utilizing our expertise in water quality analysis technology and gas measurement technology, we convert the data obtained into light indicating environmental changes around the pavilion.
We perceive this change in light as the “Shores: Edge of Evolution” and use it to decorate the interior and exterior of the pavilion. This symbolizes the expansion of “LIFE,” as suggested by the Signature Pavilion “FUTURE OF LIFE” and the prosperous life depicted in the HORIBA’s vision of “Joy and Fun for All.”

Technologies Provided by HORIBA
The structures that create the waterscape in the pavilion’s exterior water channel actually contain hidden water quality analyzers. Additionally, an air quality monitor is installed in the ceiling at the pavilion’s exit. The water quality analyzers continuously measure the conditions of the water in the water basin, and air quality monitor measures the concentration of various substances in the air inside the pavilion, both in real time, 24 hours a day. The numerical values attained from the two measurements of water and air transform into two waves of light. HORIBA’s superior “Measurement and Analysis” technology capture miniscule changes that human beings cannot perceive with our natural senses, and converts them into different light intensities.
Water quality Analysis Technology
To protect water resources and maintain the environment, various standards of water quality elements have been set. In order to promote compliance with those standards and achieve a healthy and sustainable society, HORIBA water quality analysis technology is used the world over. The water quality analyzers used at the pavilion employ newly developed thin metal sensors. They have made measuring possible in installation conditions and measurement locations that have been difficult for traditional glass sensors. The evolution of water quality analysis technology allows us to protect the safety and security of water resources, which is essential for all living beings, and will lead to a prosperous “LIFE” in the future.
Gas Measurement Technology
The atmosphere that envelops our Earth is mainly composed of nitrogen (about 78% ) and oxygen (about 21%). The remaining 1% contains various substances that affect living environments, climate, weather, and even human health.
HORIBA’s gas measurement technology, which can accurately measure minute environmental changes, contributes to the search for where these substances originate and how they exist in the atmosphere. The air quality monitor used at the pavilion employs a technology called IRLAM™*1 that can simultaneously analyze multiple gas concentrations and a technology called Open-path measurement*2 system that simplifies the measurement process and enables high-speed measurement. It measures in real time the concentration of substances such as carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and methane in the air inside the pavilion, and converts that data into a visually recognizable format, outputting the result as light installation.
*¹ IRLAM™ (Infrared Laser Absorption Modulation) is a registered trademark or trademark of HORIBA, Ltd. in Japan and other countries.
*² Open-path measurement system: A measurement method that analyzes gases directly through a dedicated optical path in open air, without collecting gas components into an analyzer.
Involvement in AR at the Pavilion
We prepared augmented reality contents to help visitors intuitively understand the concept of the light installation and feel more familiar with the process of “Measurement and Analysis” technology. By launching the Virtual Expo app and scanning the AR markers installed around the pavilion’s water basins, a magical experience begins.
In the virtual world, try placing shells, flowers, and rock salt into the water. Depending on the properties and changes in the water, you can witness beautiful light installation appearing in the pavilion before your eyes.
Future vision of “Measurement and Analysis”
HORIBA will continue striving to provide innovative technology development and solutions that bring to life our vision “Joy and Fun for All” via the original and unique HORIBA’s Analytical and Measurement technology.
